Motion Control Time Lapse Videography

Time Lapse Videography is a technique in which video of sped up in order to show something that occurs naturally slowly in a short time span. The challenge with motion control time lapse, is that the camera has to move at a very slow and continuous rate while shooting. Imagine trying to hold a slow, steady zoom, dolly or pan for 15 minutes straight. Fortunately, there exists specialty equipment for just this purpose, but unfortunately, it is very expensive. The DIY culture surrounding videography has come up with multiple hacks for this. One very accessible method is converting an egg timer into a motion control device. An egg timer has a motor that can move a lightweight camera (Flip Cam, GoPro, Iphone, etc.) in a 360 degree pan than lasts an hour.

For this individual project, you will set the goPro to take a 7 MP image every 1 second. Shoot 10 minutes of images with the GoPro atop the rotating timer. Import the images as an image sequence in After Effects. Set your composition to HDTv 1920 x 1080. Keyframe the beginning and ending parameters (scale and position) and export at full quality.
